Why design LABS should be part of your innovation process?
A Design Lab can sound deceptively simple- bring people into a room, put the problem on the table and work through it together. But what makes that time together actually valuable? Is it the people in the room, the activities you run or what happens when different ways of seeing a problem begin to collide?
Crossed Design Labs as more than workshops or idea-generation sessions. They are spaces deliberately designed to help people see a challenge differently, create possibilities together and build enough shared understanding to move something forward.

We rarely see a problem in its entirety. We see the part that sits within our experience, our role and our understanding of how things work. A Design Lab makes it possible to step outside that single view and notice what may have been missed. Someone working on the system may understand its processes, someone using it may know where it breaks down and someone working within the context may recognise nuances that no dataset can capture. When these perspectives come into conversation, assumptions can be challenged, connections can emerge and familiar problems can start to look different.
Even disagreement has a role to play. Rather than rushing towards consensus, a Lab
creates space to ask why people are seeing the same situation differently. Those
differences can reveal gaps, tensions and opportunities that may otherwise remain
hidden. What emerges is not simply a collection of opinions, but a richer picture of the
challenge at hand and a sharper understanding of what is actually worth solving.
Create better possibilities together
Some ideas only become visible when they meet another way of thinking. A detail noticed by one person can unlock an entirely different possibility for someone else; a constraint that seems limiting in one context can become the starting point for a new approach in another. This is where the value of bringing people together lies, not in generating more ideas, but in creating the conditions for ideas to combine, evolve and become something beyond their starting point. That doesn’t happen automatically. The way a conversation is framed, the questions people are invited to explore, the tools they work with and the freedom they have to experiment all shape what the group is able to imagine. Being part of the process gives them a clearer understanding of why a direction was chosen and a stronger connection to the outcome. And when a challenge cuts across teams, disciplines or organisations, that shared sense of ownership can be what turns a good idea into something that can actually move through the system. The Lab then becomes less about ending with an answer and more about creating the clarity, commitment and momentum to do something with it.
