Aadu Puli Aattam is an ancient, traditional board game of South India. The name literally means “Goats and Tigers Game” in Tamil.

It is also known as Puli Joodam/ Puli Meka in Andhra Pradesh, Huli Gatta in Karnataka & Baagh Chaal in Nepal.

How to Play

Aadu Puli Aatam is played between two players:

  • Player 1: Controls 3 Tigers (Puli)

  • Player 2: Controls 15 Goats (Aadu)

Players take alternate turns throughout the game.

Objectives

  • Tiger’s Objective: Capture 5 goats by jumping over them.

  • Goat’s Objective: Surround and block all three tigers so they cannot move.

Game Setup & Turn Order

  1. The game begins with the Tiger player placing one tiger piece on the tip of the triangle on the board.

  2. The Goat player then places one goat on any empty circle.

  3. Players continue alternating turns, placing their pieces on the board.

  4. After all three tiger pieces have been placed, the tigers may start moving on their turns.

  5. Goats cannot move until all 15 goat pieces have been placed on the board.

Movement Rules

  • Once placed, a piece can move only along the lines from one connected circle to an adjacent empty circle.

  • Only one move per turn is allowed

Goat Movement
  • Goats may move one step to an adjacent empty point, following the lines.

  • Goats cannot jump.

  • Once placed, a goat becomes active and can be used to block tigers.

Tiger Movement
  • Tigers can move to an adjacent empty point, OR

  • Jump over a goat along the line to hunt it.

  • Tigers cannot jump over other tigers.

  • Tigers may move or hunt in any direction (forward, backward, sideways), as long as the move follows the board lines.

Hunting Rules

  • A tiger may jump over a goat only if:

    • The goat is on a connected line.

    • The point immediately next to the goat is empty.

  • Hunted goats are removed from the board.

  • A tiger can hunt only one goat per turn.

  • Hunting is not compulsory.

Winning the Game

  1. Goat wins if all tigers are blocked

  2. Tiger wins if all goats are hunted
